I saw a website listing the top all-time greatest jazz clarinetists. It proclaimed Benny Goodman as #1, though I beg to differ. Get back in line, Mr. Goodman. Sidney Bechet built that car, detailed that car, and drove that car before you ever polished your commendable licks. Goodman’s great, though, as are so many other stellar performers in this week’s playlist, all majors in the musical jazz army. A mood that rises and falls through the horn of Charlie Parker, the humor of Fats Waller, the voice of Lady Day, and the piano of Bud Powell … and eventually trails out on some very somber notes. Follow with meditative silence. That’s why they call it the end. -J.H.
