President Trump declared on Truth Social this morning that 'The Moon is ours.' The implication is that the Moon is a sovereign territory of the United States of America, which is great news for Elon's lunar data center. pic.twitter.com/SzOIEfResh — Andrew Curran (@AndrewCurran_) September 6, 2026

The moon walk would be televised

Image
July 20, 1969 - I listened via radio, as always. Surprise at night: The moon walk would be televised. Culmination of great effort. But already wondering where attention should focus. Gil Scott Heron had perspecrtive: Whitey's on the Moon. When that fall at Marquette in Public Speaking class assignment to use a visual aid: I white-frosted a Styrofoam cake container and put my brother's little Astronaut figures on top. The surface of the moon was icing on a cake, inside the cake were the flames of war in Asia and riots in cities and starvation in Bangladesh.  I say it was bag mixed with confusion because there was combined great awe and pride - but there was even greater clarity in the view that Earth was in a Tangle. Same is true today, Funnily enough. .. What would Vonnegut say? 'so it goes.' My 2010s remake of the cake is enhanced here thanks to MS Co-Pilot. https://moontravellerherald.blogspot.com/2019/07/50th-anniversary-of-landing-on-moon.html

US Return to Moon

Image
NASA’s Artemis II Crew Launches to the Moon 6:30 pm EDT Apr 1 No kidding! dd   [April 2, 2026] - After a yearslong parade of missteps, the United States yesterday launched astronauts toward the Moon. In the first such mission since December 1972, four voyagers dramatically bolted into the twilight sky above the Kennedy Space Center near Cape Canaveral, Fla.   The on-board crew operating the Orion spacecraft comprises NASA’s Reid Wiseman, mission commander; Victor Glover and Christina Koch; as well as Jeremy Hansen of the Canadian Space Agency. They are now in high Earth orbit, preparatory to a journey to the Moon.   The early flight included a brief loss in communications, and a control panel malfunction indicating problems with their craft’s toilet. This dashboard snafu was quickly toggled and solved.   Later today, the go/no-go decision will come on the plan to leave Earth orbit and head to its moon.   This manned return to Moon fli...

Yet Another Moon

Image
Thanks mostly to Wikipedia… "Another Time, Another Place" was Johnny Bryne’s first original script for the series SPACE 99. That’s the show where Humans have colonized the Moon, in order to bury nuclear waste from Earth, and something nuclear goes wrong, and the Moon leaves its orbit and  then wanders through the Universe for the rest of the Series. There werent any B-17s on this Moon. As the National Enquirer had seen...Anyway... Bryne started with the concept of the worst thing he could imagine happening to the Alphans: hitting a 'mad cloud or particle storm in space' that causes their bodies to separate into duplicates. With that concept forming the episode's hook, he then had to conceive the next four acts of storyline to reach the conclusion of the Alphans coming face-to-face with themselves. The story would highlight the cyclic nature of human experience—the catastrophic failure of the 20th Century 'techno-man' resulting in a new beginning of the pr...

China Moon Plans Come into Focus

Image
It’s been something of an afterthought since the US Apollo program ended in December of 1972, but the Moon is moving into the public spotlight again. What’s becoming clear is that a new Moon race is well underway, one with plenty of participants but one most pointedly pitting China against the US. The competition has a different character than it had in the now distant past — it’s become more a long-running endurance race and less the clearly defined sprint it was in the 1960s, when fear of Sputnik tended to unite sentiment in the US. Today, as opposed parties slot in and out, the ‘where’ and ‘when’ of US space targets are in constant flux, according to a China expert and tech strategy analyst. “Do we go to Mars or the Moon?” author Dean Cheng asked, as he discussed his “China and the New Moon Race” in a book launch and lecture at the Space Policy Institute in Washington, D.C. “When you think back over the last five administrations,” he said, “how often have we gone back and fort...

Moon Times

Image
NIS T researchers have developed a system called lunar coordinate time with the express purpose to achieve precise timekeeping on the Moon.    We may recall US astronauts wore Omegas to the Moon. But maybe their time was off.   That’s because the Moon's weaker gravity causes clocks to tick faster than on Earth. That’s due to what Einstein reckoned was gravity’s influences on passage of time,   I guess you could “synchronize watches” as they did in every Mission Impossible heist, and you’d remain in time with your bro buddies, if not the cosmos.   That may not work when the great era of colonized lunacy arrives, and the machines inside different Ice Stations Gamma Alpha and Zebra call each other at an agreed-to time.   NIST boffins say this innovation paves the way for a GPS-like navigation system on the Moon, which would greatly enhance lunar exploration efforts by enabling precise landing and navigation capabilities.   Will they us...

China’s Chang'e-6 Spacecraft Returns From Moon to Earth

Destination: Far Side

Image
Mostly based on: China Launches Spacecraft to the Far Side of the Moon – Katrina Miller Artist: Wallace Wood [May 7, 2024 -  Hainan Island ] - China’s Chang’e-6 mission is nearing the start of a lunar orbital phase, after a five day journey to the moon. Its eventual goal: to place a lander on the far side, and obtain sediments, which will be returned to Earth. This occurs five days after Chang’e-6’s take off from The Wenchang space facility on Hainan Island under the propulsion of a Long March-6 rocket.   This is the latest in a series of Chinese lunar missions. Estimates suggest the orbital prelude will last 53 days. The probe will circle the moon and a lander will descend into the South Pole Aiken basin, which is said to be one of the largest meteorite impact sites in our solar system.  China has yet to publish a specific official timeline for the mission. China hopes to have a lunar research base by the 2030s. The plan  Chang’e-6  is to remove mate...

Private Lander Reporting?

Image
Kevin Chang in the New York Times A lander called Odysseus resides on the Moon as of Thursday night. This is a privately financed lander, fielded by the intuitive machines of Houston.  This lander is not your lander.  It's their lander. As with a series of moon landings before, it was unclear immediately if the vehicle had landed gently enough to continue to operate. Further word was that it was on its side but that it worked.

Japan’s SLIM lander

Image
Japan’s SLIM lander has softly landed on the moon - that is the good news. But its solar cell was not generating power, forcing the vehicle to rely on batteries.  Its mission is to  test technology fundamental to exploration in low-gravity environments, an important requirement for future scientific investigation of the solar system. Still, the soft landing is marked as a step forward for Japan Space program. Be merciful to me, O God, be merciful to me, for in thee my soul takes refuge. A step forward although when a picture finally came back from Luna, SLIM was nose deep in moon dust.     https://www.isas.jaxa.jp/en/missions/spacecraft/current/slim.html

Lander leaking fuel

Image
Jan 24 Vulcan launch of Peregrine Lander [From A.P] - The first U.S. moon landing attempt in more than 50 years appeared to have hit a mission-threatening snag. A fuel leak and “a critical loss of fuel” just hours after Monday’s launch caused a failure in the propulsion system of private company Astrobotic's Peregrine lander. That is bad news for the mission, which was expected to place the lander on the moon Feb. 23. Separately, NASA has rescheduled planned manned moon missions by as much as 12 months. NASA will now target September 2025 for Artemis II, the first crewed Artemis mission around the Moon, and September 2026 for Artemis III, which is planned to land the first astronauts near the lunar South Pole. Artemis IV, the first mission to the Gateway lunar space station, remains on track for 2028. Now you know the rest of the story Update Jan 15 -  The Peregrine lander was due to deposit several people’s ashes on the Moon. The Navajo Nation is calling for broader discuss...

Chandrayaan-3: It’s beginning to look more like the Space Age

Image
Listen People: When objectivity reaches its limit, then sympathy comes to fill the gap. If ‘you are there’ in the control room in Srikarikota, India – even if it’s via live youtube feed - the harder it is to take when science goes off the rails. Such I discovered for  myself when the beeping of a moon Lander stopped. That happened in Sept 2019 when communications went mute 2.1km from the lunar surface and Chandrayaan-2’s Vikram lander crashed on descent. The voices of the control room crew were muted too. They were lost in thought. The most recent news on the yoyage of Chandrayaan-3, too, was a bummer. Yesterday’s news held that  a moon rover deployed on the Southside of the moon by Chandrayaan-3 could not answer the wake up call after one ‘day’ on the planet. A long -- two-weeks by earthmeasure -- night’s hibernation under ultra-frigid conditions in the Sea of Nectars [may have] crashed its electronic components, and the rover failed to acknowledge sends.  This story pla...
