Mainly, after a significant sojourn in the belly of the Tate-LaBianca murders, it was to expand on Investigative Poetry, but also it was to tinker with electronics for accompanying the bard. Yesterday would have been Langston Hughes' birthday. I always counted him as a chief blues poet, but I never knew the full extent til I heard this whole record today-courtesy of WHRB. [For Barney Beal.] After long listening on blues, there eased up on me a slightly sorcerous curiosity about some of the places the music found on its way. On or off the beaten track as one would construe it is Louisville. Thoughts on which I share with you here.  Not too widely known is it that it was a hot bed once of Jug Band music. There is hardly a music that surreally sounds more like the lost track of a silent movie. Which offers strains of swirling basic American tributaries. Few musics more so that for the cost of closing your eyes can take you back in time. While New Orleans, Chicago and Memphis were the milestone towns on the rivers of jazz, blues and rock n roll, there were others, Louisville among them. On the Ohio River in the 1920s, it was for a time the center of the Jug Band music sound. Jazz is New Orleans, Jazz is New York – beyond that it gets a little dicey. Is jazz Chicago? Montreux? LA? Paris? Philadelphia? Altoona? Fact is there are a number of places off the beaten track worth consideration, having raised individuals and aggregations that influenced the major American art form. My adopted home town of Boston is one of them. Storyville, Lenny’s on the Turnpike, the Hi-Hat, Wally’s Paradise (still active) .. these were Boston jazz night clubs - stops along the way for musicians, jazz fans, party people and kitchen help. From the late 30s to the early 60s, all combined to make a moment. This moment in time is worth archiving. I would like to give compliments to Richard Vacca writing The Boston Jazz Chronicles – Faces, Places, and Nightlife 1937-1962 . He has rigorously sought out the facts, found the witnesses, and conveyed the feel of a night club jazz era that took place in Boston. In the 60s there was  the idea of drone. Not the Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV) kind. I think it was the Beatles that put it out there for us. - but  the Velvets had it via Cage. One of these days I want to take a look at Dylan's latest record, The Tempest. Again he creates from whatever's at hand, including bits and pieces of others' music in time. I like The Tempest. It may not be great across the board. But some numbers are more than great - they are unimaginable without there being a Bob Dylan. There is a style of electric blues guitar. It is one of chords more than stinging single notes. It’s about trembling tremolo, and monotonous vibrato, of really seriously bent major-and-minor blues notes, that really conjure an evocative mood. Mood is a big thing for me. John Fog-arty did a riff on the tremolo style – a lot of people call it bawling guitar - that came to stand for a sort of swamp sound. Where did it come from? Fog-arty worked in the warehouse of Arhoolie records, I believe. And had access to Roebucks Staples records , and some others, who were creating this music within a music, and Fog-arty was taken by it, and took it out in those days on the Fillmore rock circuit. It was described as a swamp thing. This style, chord-heavy, is out of the margins of the most classic blues guitar, but quite significant. None was greater on the bawling blues guitar sound than Roebuck Staples, center, leader and progenitor of the Staples Singers. He early on got an electric guitar, ...

After promoting Link Wray’s offbeat mountain shack hippie period record last week it is time to sample his core oeuvre with the Wraymen and such. I am gonna hip you to some stuff I found more lately. That is The Wild One , which evokes for me Third Stone From the Sun by Jimi Hendrix (used for a high school film class opus called “ Lenny Bruce in Space”),which invokes Telstar by Joe Meek and the Tornados . Threw in Rawhide ( Memphis Rockabilly Band used to kill with this – also probably theme for an oldies show or two). Then done first by the English Shadows is Shawnee Link’s Apache , boinging out to Cecelia . Finally, we return to space with Interstellar Overdrive by the Pink Floyds . The moral of the story is that surf music is a space thing. Sunnyland had a red Wuritzer electric piano with which he was ready to part. Say for $500. Trouble was that's how much it cost to fix each key. He liked it cause it stayed in tune and was portable. But, wow, he made some fabulous music on that thing, quite different in style and attack, naturally, than that which he made with a regular piano. As far as I know, little of this was recorded. On Adephi Really Chicago's Blues LP he plays it on Rollin and Tumblin that is kind of a fragment. Using the power of mog I am going to create a Wurlitzer electric list . Starting at what I will call the end with Riders on the Storm of 70s, then moving to the classic soul 60s with Candi Staton and Aretha Franklin who used the instrument to great effect on "Im Just a Prisoner" and "I Never Loved a Man" , receptively.
