Ripplin' and Cascadin'

Image
Did a breaking story Sunday-Monday on a bank run. A first for me! Was still catching my breath on Wednesday. Members of the high-tech and venture capital communities — as well as many in the world beyond — braced today in the immediate aftermath of last week’s Silicon Valley Bank failure. The regulators also said they had taken control of New York-based Signature Bank, which had also faltered, after becoming a major banking service provider to companies in crypto markets. The regulators announced “systemic risk exceptions” for both banks. This exception allows the regulators to take extraordinary action that goes beyond what they are are minimally required to do, and is used in rare circumstances when inaction may lead to a snowballing of investor fear. On Friday, the Silicon Valley Bank was closed by the California Department of Financial Protection and Innovation, and the FDIC was named as receiver. That came as the bank struggled to meet customers’ often-frantic requests for withdra...

Ron Levy - Coconaut Milk

Image
We were celebrating Mardi Gras a few weeks ago, listening to New Orleans and New Orleans-style music. Pulled out an old EP 45 by Boston's Ron Levy Bluesman Band. Coconaut Milk. Then, found that Ron had posted it to his YouTube page [see below].  Back in the day Ron let me create the Sleeve for this record. I got to gather some of my buds {Dave Hofstetter took the pic} and "Find" some art [the images of city and feet were from "1001 Afternoons in Chicago" by Ben Hecht 1922 [Racine's own]].  Layout is cool. You look at the graphic objects enough they finally start talking to you! Anyway I worked hours and hours on this. I loved Record Covers and would try my own hand. And my hand is clutzy. Ron came over to check it out. He looks at it and says "that's funky." And I say "Funky, good or bad?" And Ron says "Funky good" and smiles.  I was so relieved, and happy. I started trying to create newsletters in the basement when I was 6....

On Memphis Minnie

Image
This poem and art disappeared for awhile from the old Radio Weblog site. Found it and thought I'd repeat it over here. Tagging it [new feature on this blog] with 'blues.' Most go back and do a lot of that. When I wrote it, it was snowing in Boston, and my flight to Orlando LotusSphere had been bumped one day. WHRB was in the intercession where it plays artists in lengthy [day-long, week-long, etc] sets. On Memphis Minnie   0. I was on the sofa and outside it snowed Getting ready to go to Florida. They were playin Memphis Minnie on the radio Just Memphis Minnie hour upon hour And I started writing down what I heard And observed   1 Her train done been here and gone Look what you get...she says Look what you gettin Gettin for a lousy dime. Splash!...the high hat says in turn Ya gotta think about it I'm gonna strut my stuff...she replies Always calling...calling Calling the Ice Man Warning ... But friendly... Calling the Butcher and of course the Chauffer Taki...

Some Memory Serves Well

Image
If your memory serves you well. We were going to meet again and wait. This Wheels on Fire. They used to play it on the radio in Milwaukee. And the all of us got excited about that and wanted to go to the East. Where it was kabloom! The Atlantic water coast. Turning sky things ablaze. Where Dylan had been writing this stuff. Him and Allen Ginsberg. So Jeff and me got a ride - they had ride boards, maps of America, and you’d hook up somehow - ride with a Physics major who ate a lot of candy and who said to us learnedly and secretly ‘in a group orgy whatever feels good: feels good.’ Who knew? We shred a glance and the Physics major eye the road with hands on the Chrysler’s wheel. And he drove us to New York and it was a bright day and then was turning toward outta-work time, and we were going down the subway as a million people were coming at us. Crazy working people! We got lost that night - almost stayed in a shelter - but tore up our Free Clinic passes, and took our chances. We got lo...

Silver bullets, Kimosabe

Some of the stuff gets lost over the years. One web site I worked for transfered ownership, and the Web server actually fell off the back of the truck during migration. Anyway, found this old story the other day about XML. It is from April 1999, and pretty suprisingly on target in a lot of ways as to what XML turned into. This story includes part of an interview I did via E-mail with Web Inventer Tim Berners Lee. I saved the email. It's around the house somewhere. A giggy kid I still is. As a journalist, I wish I could have picked up on RSS earlier...it seems to me like the killer app for XML..at least for content folks. http://xml.coverpages.org/adtMag-xml990510.html XML:The last silver bullet -ADT

Christmas Locomotive

Image
Ran this on Radio Weblog, bring it back for this occassion. Happy Christmas. [Assembled by dwarves] [At left, wreathe by Jeanne; photo by Mike] Opposite your chorus line of thought A trembling train with convictions rides In circles and clovers And unravels the poked pathway To find your feet Ten track minutes away from the Christmas tree glow That father digested Where copper through tourniquet currents flows To the chimney where no one has been To see the thin clank of the opening Just a panthering train cross the swells of the carpet Through oriental valleys and their piled paisley sockets Through skyscraper wrappings the apple spanked harlotty papers and things to return to your feet Flocking petitions like rotary blades remind of a balking sacred day when manger roasted hay and chimera wave hanks at a Lionel train --Jack Vaughan Adapted from original; "Garage," 1967

At the Throne of the Third Heaven

i.  Sweet little queen of spades  Strange little stone heart  A chestnut!  The architectural fragments  Of gone civilizations, like  The beaded silverware of a king  Now in a museum.  He’s got snakes on his head  And Buddhist dancing girls  Surround him.   ii.   How different it looks  My second time in the throne  Of the third heaven   Last date  In the tin-foil palace  Of silver and gold where  Religious balls hover  And flying wings wing   Fear not! Hampton sings  In my garage  I am a Saint  And God is the king.   iii.   Now in my ososad apartment  With the found fens rose  Long gone Sharon  Off over tea W e stared at each other  Over Aphrodite  Wrote a poem together  And I realized  I was a turkey   How small in the third heaven  I am an altar boy  Lighting candles  Ever...
