Sunnyland Slim with Capt Beefhart. Boston, 1978

Image
Sunnyland Slim with Capt Beefhart. Boston, 1978. Sunnyland liked Beefhart, and they got along well. But Beefhart could hardly sit still or have a (two-sided) conversation then. it seemed like he was up all the time. Slim bought some Johnny Walker and was looking forward to 'sitting down and talking' but Beefhart's wife had to insist he get some sleep at that point. [Paul's Mall, Boston] Slim's got a look here like he is getting ready to go on stage.

Oh my papa!

I was in New Orleans ( I think) in the very late 90s and I took this picture, catching a bus for the convention. I applied a filter to it, and it has some feeling of the moment for me. Flash forward: The head of the company that put on the conference later served jail time - for fraud, or cooking the books, I guess. By near-total coincidence, I ran near into him one day at his HQ (on Long Island) - it was the day before he was splashed on the front page of the Wall Street Journal, he was in his building's lobby, and it was just minutes after the Feds had told him the gig was up. And when I got outside, their helicopter was talking off. When I reflect, its all like that old TV show that began "There are a million stories in The Naked City". Or - remember this one? - "You Are There" with Walter Cronkite.

Letter to the Editor on Trump family business

Image
Letter to the Editor: Details of Trump family businesses continue to emerge, most of which touch on new forms of digital currencies. Surprisingly President Trump with little fanfare fits in a bit of digital currency policy here and there and he has left his sons the job to follow-up with deals. The deal in today’s paper is not easy to comprehend. Neither is Three-Card Monde on 14th St. The news is that a company called Alt5 Sigma, a little known Las Vegas firm previously focused on biotechnology, according to Bloomberg, said it would buy $1.5 B of World Liberty tokens. The company World Liberty – effectively a crypto currency company - was formed by the Trumps and others late last year, and it began to mint “tokens.” Alt5 Sigma will now carry tokens on their books, much as the former MicroStrategies software company does with bitcoin. The Alt5 Sigma company had annual revenue of $12.53 million in fiscal year 2024. In a few weeks the Trump Family has garnered over $1B [dollars, not tok...

The Glories of Charlie's Tap

Image
The Glories of Charlie's Tap. Let's see - went here many times. On Green St. Always comfy. Music on the other side of bar sorta via a duplex step up. Saw Tarbox Ramblers with Dennis Pultinas there for example, and open poetry readings. The Jukebox in the barroom had jazz, including Sidewinder by Lee Morgan, and this favorably impressed John Sinclair on his visit. [One poster said Don Cherry played there - must have been the '60s] One of the punters among the lot I would see at every appearance of a Chicago blues band in Boston. The beer looks ice cold. Am sure I caught enough second hand smoke there to scare my doctor. This is on a Friday night when Central Sq got off of work. When I retired I had to forgo workingmen's bars!  That based on an old Gordon Boraks joke: "I dont go to the workingman's bar anymore - I'm retired!"
