Es la música Cubana, chico! And a remarkable journey it’s been. The West African slave trade brought a sizable working force for the Cuban cane fields. Naturally, they brought their music with them and what developed from that multi-cultural (from Ghana, Dahomey, Benin, etc.) brew became the basis for the “tropical” Cuban sound of the 20th century onward. No surprise then, that such a music found favor back in the motherland, come the spread of records and radio broadcasts throughout the African continent.

Next thing you know there’s Senegalese bands playing mambos and singing in pidgin Spanish. Diffusion can be a very positive thing! And on the streets of downtown Havana, it’s not too much of an exaggeration to say every corner has a bar and every bar has a band killin’ it. A good town for music lovers, dancers, and drinkers.

Ribot is the one ringer here but his group, Los Cubanos Postizos (The Prosthetic Cubans), are legit; the music was written by Arsenio Rodriguez, a Cuban legend; and it's some very fine garage band Cuban, methinks.

And as a political aside, Cubans had long been fond of saying “Contra Fidel? Ni en la pelota!” (“Go against Fidel? Not even in baseball!”) Don’t bet against Cuba. - J.H.
