Do millennials and those younger even recognize “The Stripper”, a hallmark of long ago and far away? Was there ever a cooler hand than that of Yul Brynner, Steve McQueen, James Colburn, or Charles Bronson (that knife toss!!!) in The Magnificent Seven? The Peter Gunn theme represented good guys vs. baddies for an entire era and Duke Ellington’s murder movie score could keep retired gangsters looking over their shoulder. Ornette Coleman challenges you to listen while the rest of set is sweetness and light. But today there’s pink sauce on TikTok. -J.H.

Littles, a garage band from the streets of Tehran – definitely pre-reign of the ayatollahs; The Coup sharing granddaddy’s advice “Wear clean draws every day, cuz things may fall the wrong way. You’ll be lying there, waiting for the ambulance, your underwear got holes and shit.” Arab, Indian and British musicians come together in London to form Transglobal Underground – the benefits of a pluralistic society; Yves Simon – a French rock ‘n roller from the disco era (1973), rapping poetry before most of the world knew what rapping was; Los Wembler’s de Iquitos emerged from Eastern Peru’s Amazon region, playing surf music and singing about “oro negro”…oil, that is, black gold, Texas tea; and much more. Oh, and have you ever heard of the Velvet Underground? -J.H.

Once upon a time in Tehran.

And you, Spanish speaker, thought interpreting titles of music from Spain would be easy. Try a little Basque on for size, or Catalan, Galician, Asturian or Aragonese. Haven’t been there for a long time, but when I do visit I’m going to claim I speak Mexican and we’ll see what happens. This playlist will take you from North to South, East and West, and even over to a Spanish “possession”, the Canary Islands. There’s Gypsy music, revolutionary era ballads, North African influenced sounds, and folk idioms from throughout (we don’t like pop). I have to get this in: one of my favorite Spanish sayings is “Me cago en la hostia!” (I shit on the communion wafer!) Now to say that takes cojones in a Catholic country. But there you have the Spanish in the 21st century: more ““laissez-faire” than “estrictamente prohibido”. -J.H.
