Two very different worlds. Unthinking people with no knowledge of the region will routinely refer to the continent as a single place, as in “France, Mexico, Thailand, Africa…”. The coastal Mediterranean regions of the North are complemented by mountain ranges and the vast Saharan desert with a population of Arab, Bedouin, and Amazigh (“noble” or “free”) peoples. The indigenous Amazigh, Kabylie and others have long been referred to by the outside world as “Berbers”, though the Latin root suggesting ‘barbarism’ begs the modern day usage of a name the people chose themselves.

Southern Africa is a world apart. If you want to learn more, Google it. Specifically: Lesotho, Namibia, Zimbabwe, Mozambique and South Africa. Each with distinct musical traditions. Surprise, surprise! The barbarians of Africa’s geographic extremes have a voice to be heard and you should listen! - Jim Haas
