salm 102 Do not hide your face from me when I am in distress. Turn your ear to me; when I call, answer me quickly. For my days vanish like smoke; my bones burn like glowing embers. My heart is blighted and withered like grass; I forget to eat my food. In my distress I groan aloud and am reduced to skin and bones. I am like a desert owl, like an owl among the ruins. I lie awake; I have become like a bird alone on a roof.

Cavalcade of the World - UN Day

Image
Tomorrow is UN Day - I posted this two years ago -  I headed it Cavalcade of the World – as recognition of the news of time time passing ….. and in homage to then retiring Scott Simon of NPR. The U.N. is a source of controversy now – conservatives see it as a Martian colony that landed East of Murray Hill In NY ….  ….. When I was young … it was hopeful thing… better than the League of Nations – say this in the wrong bar today and you get an F U. 'What's the big look back and ponder?' Simon is asked. He said more or less:"I recall when I started out the world was still working to ensure the carnage of the Holocaust and WW II would not be (easily) repeated. So we had UN, NATO, Berlin Airlift, and so on.The biggest surprise today is that motivation to put humanism ahead of nationalism has unexpectedly been TURNED ON ITS HEAD." Why does he still do radio he is asked and Simon says the likes to watch the Cavalcade of the World. (Cavalcade is formal procession of people...

Peking Sonification

English:  This song was generated using three years of air quality data in Beijing. The daily measurements of air pollutants alter the sounds and visuals over the duration of the song. Chandrayaan-3: It’s beginning to look more like the Space Age

Image
Listen People: When objectivity reaches its limit, then sympathy comes to fill the gap. If ‘you are there’ in the control room in Srikarikota, India – even if it’s via live youtube feed - the harder it is to take when science goes off the rails. Such I discovered for  myself when the beeping of a moon Lander stopped. That happened in Sept 2019 when communications went mute 2.1km from the lunar surface and Chandrayaan-2’s Vikram lander crashed on descent. The voices of the control room crew were muted too. They were lost in thought. The most recent news on the yoyage of Chandrayaan-3, too, was a bummer. Yesterday’s news held that  a moon rover deployed on the Southside of the moon by Chandrayaan-3 could not answer the wake up call after one ‘day’ on the planet. A long -- two-weeks by earthmeasure -- night’s hibernation under ultra-frigid conditions in the Sea of Nectars [may have] crashed its electronic components, and the rover failed to acknowledge sends.  This story pla...

Southern Ring Nebula Sonification

Image
1,731 views Aug 31, 2022 NASA’s JWST uncovered two views of the Southern Ring Nebula — in near-infrared light (at left) and mid-infrared light (at right) — and each has been adapted to sound. Two stars orbit one another at the center of this planetary nebula. The smaller, fainter red star in the mid-infrared image at right is at the end of its lifetime — it has puffed off layers of gas and dust for thousands of years. Its companion, the brighter, larger star in both images, has stirred up those ejections. Now, listeners can hear the stars and surrounding shells of material in each image clearly. In this sonification, the colors in the images were mapped to pitches of sound — frequencies of light converted directly to frequencies of sound. Near-infrared light is represented by a higher range of frequencies at the beginning of the track. Mid-way through, the notes change, becoming lower overall to reflect that mid-infrared includes longer wavelengths of light.
