Michael Collins, ‘Third Man’ of the Moon Landing, Dies at 90

“I have been places and done things you simply would not believe. I feel like saying: I have dangled from a cord a hundred miles up; I have seen the earth eclipsed by the moon, and enjoyed it. I have seen the sun’s true light, unfiltered by any planet’s atmosphere. I have seen the ultimate black of infinity in a stillness undisturbed by any living thing. I do have this secret. This precious thing, that I will always carry with me.” -- Michael Collins, “Carrying the Fire.”   Michael Collins, ‘Third Man’ of the Moon Landing, Dies at 90 - NYT Apr 28, 2021

First Saturday in May

Image
My pick in the Kentucky Derby was HIGHLY MOTIVATED. It was not to be. Here was my POV: Trained by the capable Chad Brown and ridden by the able Javier Castellano. The horse was third in the Gotham and second in the Bluegrass. This horse was nipped at the wire in the Bluegrass by today's favorite. As we move to the Derby, we usually look for a horse that was coming on at the end of the last outing at a shorter distance.  But I have a feeling, with Brown, the rider may have been told the prize was the first Saturday in May. It’s the horse's third of the form cycle, which is a nice pattern for Brown. The horse is tactical and you’d like to see him in the forefront of the second wave on the back stretch. He is running from a tough hole on the outside, and may, like Essential Quality, have had too hard a race in the last. That's Patriot great Wes Welker below having a wild weekend at the 2014 Derby.  Click here for the rest of the story.

Does deep ocean research have useful guidance for finding life in the deep beyond?

This is a really great discussion of space and the search for life. It is a lively lecture led by Clara Sousa-Silva, a fellow at the Center for Astrophysics | Harvard & Smithsonian. She and her colleagies look for signs of life on other planets "using astronomical tools to detect faint signals emitted by potential alien biospheres."  You must be sure to watch the whole show, even though I start here, as part as our archiving efforts, at the end, where Moon Traveller reporter Jack Vaughan asks a question. A YouTube transcript of this interchange is included. Next question facebook uh from jack. deep ocean research is sometimes seen as a template for looking for life beyond earth does that resonate in any way in relation to your own research? Yes absolutely i think just thinking beyond kind of surface dwelling life is a really useful exercise i think one of the reasons i like the the venus story so much despite all its controversy is that i'm hoping you will really chan...

SIXTY YEARS OF ARHOOLIE - AN ANNIVERSARY CELEBRATION

Image
The first time I posted this up, the vid came down, so here goes again. The whole video is quite historic and excellent from beginning to end if you are into roots, ethnic music or just into music. Ry Cooder's number around the 8 minute point is a fave of mine. I also liked his description of encountering it.  Which follows. [I have a little NLP trascriber known as Otter that is like magic for stuff like this...] Ry Cooder on Joe Williams’ Sloppy Drunk . I bought the record in 1960 I think it came out. I was a young boy. And I used to go down to this little record store in a house these two ladies had. And they had it in an old bungalow house downtown Los Angeles, that I had to take two buses to get to. Regular bus and and electric bus. And they let you play the records on a little Webcor schoolhouse record player. I put the needle over there, took it out of the sleeve and you know and put the LP down the record itself and then put the needle on and Sloppy Drunk JUMPED OFF! Never h...
