Murder most foul-May sweep to my revenge

Image
M urder most foul, as in the best it is; But this most foul, strange and unnatural. As meditation or the thoughts of love, May sweep to my revenge. William Shakespeare – Hamlet Act 1 Scene 5 | One thing I'd note this morning is: Yknow the litany of evocative songs he turns into a story is one thing - and NPR has a pretty cool list of all the associations - streaming from one image to another... but there is subtext on a couple of things that I could feel that I wanted to mention. He mentions: Robert Johnson's "Crossroads" and the old country piece "Deep Ellum Blues". Deep Ellum is mere blocks from the Dallas School Book Depository. And Robert Johnson recorded in Dallas in that general area. I think Dylan absorbed ghosts, and constantly studies literature, history, music and humans, and it continues to come out in his music. I spent a few days in Dallas a couple of times on business, family and pleasure. I got a tremendous sense of dread wh...

Spaceman's Guide to Corona Virus Isolation Method

I Spent a Year in Space, and I Have Tips on Isolation to Share https://t.co/JBwIZ1nvXE — Jack Vaughan (@JackIVaughan) March 22, 2020 Follow a schedule  " You will find maintaining a plan will help you and your family adjust to a different work and home life environment.  "  And don’t forget to include in your schedule a consistent bedtime. But pace yourself  Take time for fun activities: I met up with crewmates for movie nights, complete with snacks, and binge-watched all of “Game of Thrones”   — twice. Go outside One of the things I missed most while living in space was being able to go outside and experience nature. After being confined to a small space for months, I actually started to crave nature — the color green, the smell of fresh dirt, and the feel of warm sun on my face. That flower experiment became more important to me than I could have ever imagined. My colleagues liked to play a recording of Earth sounds, like birds and rustli...

Milwaukee WFOX AM from April 1957

Image
I am linking here to a replay (partial)(available for a few weeks) of a show broadcast this Saturday on WMBR in Cambridge. Presented is a Top40 list from Milwaukee WFOX AM from April 1957 – about the time the Milwaukee Braves were launching their most incredible season! https://wmbr.org/archive/88_Rewound____2_8_20_5%3A58_AM.mp3 WMBR is the MIT station located in Cambridge MA and as you might expect the radio signal engineering at the station is exceptional what's even better is the music volunteers provide insight into unique genres, and it's pretty educational to listen to, as well as fun. A DJ there that does several shows is Alex McNeil, who has a fabulous understanding for  rocknroll and related music, as well as very imaginative approaches to what I would call musicology. He also grinds it out – meaning he does the detail labor of research– which is most apparent in 88 Rewound, the show linked to here. McNeil does a show Saturday mornings at 6 am ET called 88 Re...

More secrets of the Velvet Underground - per Jonathan

Image
Velvet Underground Jonathan Richman They were wild like the USA A mystery band in a New York way Rock and roll, but not like the rest And to me, America at it's best How in the world were they making that sound? Velvet Underground. A spooky tone on a Fender bass Played less notes and left more space Stayed kind of still, looked kinda shy Kinda far away, kinda dignified. How in the world were they making that sound? Velvet Underground. Now you can look at that band and wonder where All that sound was coming from With just 4 people there. Twangy sounds of the cheapest types, Sounds as stark as black and white stripes, Bold and brash, sharp and rude, Like the heats turned off And you're low on food. How in the world were they making that sound? Velvet Underground. Like this... Twangy sounds of the cheapest kind, Like "Guitar sale $29.99, " Bold and brash, stark and still, Like the heats turned off And you can't pay the bill. Both ...

Remembering the Talking Hands

Image
BOSTON - We were talking about Wisconsin miscians the other day. One thing about Jerry Harrison is not only did he found the Talking Heads but he also was a founding member of the Modern Lovers, which was arguably an even more important band. They were from around here, and their song "Road Runner" has been considered for the State Song. I looked it up and he went to Harvard to study architecture, then met Jonathan Richmond, the main Modern Lover, and they bonded because they liked the Velvet Underground. The Velvets were played fairly heavily on the Milwaukee alternative radio. The Modern Lovers gigged all over for several years, so got somewhat proficient. Their drummer, David Robinson, later joined the Cars. I personaly think Harrison's influence on the Talking Heads who formed at the Rhode Island School of Design. They all got pretty good on their instruments, but at the outset I bet they didnt sound much different than a typical basement or garage combo,...

Mr Deeds goes to City Hall

UPDATED - Not actually prepared (honestly, would have gotten haircut if I knew this was coming), but I stood with my neighbors on this one - Compact Living (Sponsored by Prince Albert Canned Sardines) is a hypercool new thing. Where young and old live in something about the size of a hotel room. Truth be told, most of these things end up as hotel rooms anyway in the Disruptive Age of AirBnB. Now, It is a decent idea on paper (see below), but the density here is none of it in the manner to maintain an anchored community with kids, for example, that play on the playgrounds, populate the Little League, go to the local schools. Which was Mission Hill's saving grace - a Village in a City Verticalism is not the only way to go. Who sees Boston as Hong Kong, Tokyo, or Blade Runner? Or San Francisco - that formerly Wonderful Wonderful Town. Your humble servant appears here... https://t.co/liodXOzBbl — Jack Vaughan (@JackIVaughan) January 24, 2020 Okay maybe it is a good thing...
