Remembering the Talking Hands

Image
BOSTON - We were talking about Wisconsin miscians the other day. One thing about Jerry Harrison is not only did he found the Talking Heads but he also was a founding member of the Modern Lovers, which was arguably an even more important band. They were from around here, and their song "Road Runner" has been considered for the State Song. I looked it up and he went to Harvard to study architecture, then met Jonathan Richmond, the main Modern Lover, and they bonded because they liked the Velvet Underground. The Velvets were played fairly heavily on the Milwaukee alternative radio. The Modern Lovers gigged all over for several years, so got somewhat proficient. Their drummer, David Robinson, later joined the Cars. I personaly think Harrison's influence on the Talking Heads who formed at the Rhode Island School of Design. They all got pretty good on their instruments, but at the outset I bet they didnt sound much different than a typical basement or garage combo,...

Mr Deeds goes to City Hall

UPDATED - Not actually prepared (honestly, would have gotten haircut if I knew this was coming), but I stood with my neighbors on this one - Compact Living (Sponsored by Prince Albert Canned Sardines) is a hypercool new thing. Where young and old live in something about the size of a hotel room. Truth be told, most of these things end up as hotel rooms anyway in the Disruptive Age of AirBnB. Now, It is a decent idea on paper (see below), but the density here is none of it in the manner to maintain an anchored community with kids, for example, that play on the playgrounds, populate the Little League, go to the local schools. Which was Mission Hill's saving grace - a Village in a City Verticalism is not the only way to go. Who sees Boston as Hong Kong, Tokyo, or Blade Runner? Or San Francisco - that formerly Wonderful Wonderful Town. From the Vault - Mr Wizard Redux

Image
One day I go out on the patio to try and create something I saw Mr. Wizard do. Rough Schema as with all Vaughan Projects: There was tall bag part that filled up with the lighter than air. An apparatus to form a base and hold the heat source. That was it. My sister was there. Finding a dry cleaners bag without a hole in it was about impossible. Maybe I plugged things with Scotch tape. Getting the Sterno was easy, we always had some at the base of a bronze chafing dish..... Read more .

Kissing the Mysterious Glow Rock Aloft

Among the ghosts that haunt these times is this one: We’ve been to the moon, but may never return. Anyone with any imagination is forced to ask: Did Earth People lose their mojo? Yutu - 2 tracks. The far side. Courtesy of Chinese Academy of Sciences  Looking back, the arc of progress the moon landings’ foretold was an arc in descent, marking Earth People’s imprisonment on the Third Stone from the Sun, a hard stop to such progress, and a coming back to circular time. The will fails us, but likely the imagination too. You can’t say Return to the Moon is impossible, but in today’s world, it doesn’t appear to be in the offing.   ~~~~~ * ~~~~~ ~~~~~ * ~~~~~ ~~~~~ * ~~~~~  The Year 2019 was a Year of Trouble for Lunar Optimism. Bright with hope were voyages of the Israelis and the Indians in 2019. Bright but doomed. The Indian’s dashed quest being most tragic, its nation gathered around TVs, the countdown going terribly wrong, and the residue then o...
