“The Great golem we have made against our enemies is our culture, our bomb culture-its logic, its faith, its vision.” -- E.I.  Doctorow  My youth was overshadowed by the Bomb. It is still around but, despite sometimes being revisited, the Bomb is in the background. Strangely, the scientist who successfully ran the Bomb's creation, was a poetic fellow. But, given that, it is not surprising that he came to be haunted by his creation, and his fall from the technology pedestal his triumph had allowed him. Robert Oppenheimer is a truly haunting figure, well depicted in “American Prometheus" by Kai Bird and Martin J Sherwin. [2005] There is much to recommend the book, and much to learn from it. Here I am going to focus on Oppenheimer's life in Boston and Cambridge, where he attended to school. Like others that came to maturity in these parts in those times (the 1920s), he helped build the latter 20th Century's military-industrial complex based on the startling stri...

Fire Away in the Danger's Hour Stakes, 2018

Image
This was a nicely formful race. The Danger's Hour Stakes at 1m on the turf ran Apr 8, 2018 for a $100,000 purse. Several accomplished horses used this for their first out for the new season - notably Mo Town and Projected. They had the highest Beyers, somewhat surpassing Conquest Pantera and Fire Away. The projection was for Macgone (who won the last two editions of this race), Hit it and Secretary at War to take the lead, and that is pretty much how it went, although Motown was right in the early mix. Being off a layoff, Mo Town may have been especially keen to run.  While the horse failed in last year's Derby preps and was a bit up and down and on and off, he'd seemed to come into his own at the end of last season. If we were to adjudge that Conquest Pantera's and Fire Away's speed numbers were recent, and that Projected and Mo Town's were from last season, we could fairly expect that Conquest Pantera and Fire Away would have an edge today, and that was...

Scylla, you're breaking my art Any Sunday you can still go down and buy the Boston Herald, and the colorful tales of Prince Valiant. It kind of amazes me. This is something "from the vault" that first ran on Moon Herald in 2014. I am not sure why I pulled it up again, except for general amazement. Imp Bannon at crux of collusion Cambridge Analytica has been dramatically in the news, and has now been tied to Facebook and to Steve Bannon, Trump's Iago (not that The Donald is a noble Moor at all). Why this is here: We have a link between feedback, computers, and news -  major Moon Traveller preocupations. That’s Saul folks I set out here to write a prayer - something I'd learn and which would become mine as I learned it better. It may long be a work in progress. A couple of versions are shown here, including a recording. What is going in the latest version is dealing with the heroic event (Saul falls) within the context of circular, mindful time. ...
