Sensible Bob

I call this Sensible Bob because my friend Gordon Thomas said: What's with this guy being so sensible all of a sudden?" It is a wonder - wonderful we have it as he tells more about how he views art and business than in any one place. Bob Dylan's MusiCares person of the year acceptance speech begins:

I'm glad for my songs to be honored like this. But you know, they didn't get here by themselves. It's been a long road and it's taken a lot of doing. These songs of mine, they're like mystery stories, the kind that Shakespeare saw when he was growing up. I think you could trace what I do back that far. They were on the fringes then, and I think they're on the fringes now. And they sound like they've been on the hard ground.

And here's a neat addenda with Bill Flanagan - I was sure he was getting big laughs with the "Why Me Lord" stuff and this confirms it. I imagine he had his Charlie Chaplin look. In this add-on he says some nice, worthwhile things about the late Willy DeVille (who I put ahead of Bruce Springsteen, if you want to know.)

I NOTICED THAT SOME PEOPLE WHO WERE NOT AT THE EVENT READ THE TRANSCRIPT OF YOUR SPEECH AND DIDN’T GET THAT SOME OF IT WAS TONGUE IN CHEEK. WHEN YOU SAID, “WHY ME, LORD?” IN THE ROOM YOU WERE LAUGHING AND SO WAS THE AUDIENCE. IN PRINT, SOME PEOPLE THOUGHT IT WAS ALL SERIOUS.

Yeah, well you had to be there.

Another linchpin in the sensible parade is the AARP interiew coinciding with Shadows in the Night release.

Q: A lot of your newer songs deal with aging. You once said that people don’t retire, they fade away, they run out of steam. And now you’re 73, you’re a great-grandfather.

A: Look, you get older. Passion is a young man’s game, OK? Young people can be passionate. Older people gotta be more wise. I mean, you’re around awhile, you leave certain things to the young and you don’t try to act like you’re young. You could really hurt yourself.
