Hard Rain

Image
Another Hard Rain - - he may have blown out his voice on this but it was worth it. Was sitting like in 6th row afternoon show in Providence within a couple of days of this recording. Mick Ronson with greatest guitar. Whole band powering chords. Rob Stoner bass leading the ensemble. Dylan declaiming. A total blast.

Little Richard

Image
I got to see Little Richard one time. He headlines a Dick Clark Oldies Show at Milwaukee Summerfest in 1971. Following the lead of the declining Beatles (“Get Back”) and reborn Rolling Stones (“Brown Sugar”) and the periodical hood ornament light of Creem magazine, we were migrating to rocknroll and glad to be in the presence of the pioneer spirit Richard, who had begun to go on the Johnny Carson Tonight Show to be outrageous. Now he has left this world. May 9, 2020. So, Richard was top of the bill, but that was a tough one, cause it was quite a bill. I am sure he would be hard to follow, but on the other hand it wasn’t easy for him to follow the Drifters, Coasters, Bo Diddley (who I got to talk to through the chain link fence at the foot of the stage) and Chuck Berry. Chuck really hit a home run. As a result, Little Richard was kind of anti-climatic. He went straight to ‘acting up’ and he kept repeating that he was the greatest, the prettiest, the thingiest and so on. He how...

Things we will leave behind

Image
Ma was in the hospital. In ICU. “Where’s my sweater?” she asked. They’d had to cut up her sweater when they took her in the ambulance. “It’s gone, Ma. They had to cut it off you.” I watched her as she thought about it, absorbed it. “Well, I got my use out of it” she said, or, “It did its job” – something like that. And I thought, how grateful she was, and how we have to be able to leave even things we are grateful for behind.

“Call me Lee” – Kerouac and Konitz

Image
At the heart of Beat writing is the idea that spontaneity is crucial in expression. The method is best summarized in Jack Kerouac’s “Essentials of Spontaneous Prose” – featuring such an apothegm as “Be crazy dumbsaint of the mind” and “Blow as deep as you want to blow.” The immediate guide for Kerouac was jazz, most especially the bebop form led forward by Charlie Parker. But among the other influential jazz players there were many others that Kerouac followed. And among these was Lee Konitz, vaunted alto saxophonist who passed away last week at 92 in New York, from complications of Covid-19 and pneumonia. Although the brutal coronavirus caught up with him, Konitz was truly a survivor, one who followed his own beacon across a cavalcade of styles of jazz, continuing to play until very recently. His connection to Kerouac is enduringly important. Born in Chicago, Konitz as a lad was inspired by Benny Goodman. He went on to play with the Claude Thornhill orchestra, Stan...
