Al compas del mundo - programa - In the sky - It's a refrain!

Image
Al compas del mundo - programa #25, 4-28-22 From the roll of Cole Cozy on Topsy.  To the genius of Ellington in the musical church of Mahalia. Then, a raucous house party fray with Moms and Pearl. And Teodulo Naranjo's echoing waterfall music wall.  To the chugging lilting '70s Urban Groove of Cotonou. All over the world! - J.V. Look, up in the ether! It’s a chord! It’s a refrain!…It’s super-Al compas del mundo! Classier than a creepy mullet. More powerful than a hidden motive. Able to leap musical provincialism in a single sound. - J.H. 01 Red Prysock - Hand Clappin’ (USA) 02 Topsy, Pt. 2 - Cozy Cole (USA) 03 King Curtis - Heavenly Blues (USA) 04 Duke Ellington - Portrait of Mahalia Jackson (USA) 05 Pearl Bailey and Moms Mabley - Saturday Night Fish Fry (USA) 06 The Duke Pearson Nonet – Heavy Legs (USA) 07 Miles Davis - John McLaughlin (USA) 08 Paco de Lucia - La Tumbona (España) 09 Teodulo Naranjo - Son Del Viento (Mexico) 10 Conjunto Jarocho Lindo Veracruz - El Balaju...

The Anvil of Civilization - Collapse of the Soviet Empire and seeds of new European war

Image
The Anvil of Civilization  When I first got to this town, honey -- I had a library job at night. I would take the last Red Line train out of Boston South Station. Would run like the devil -- to make my connections. I had to catch that train. Had to make the South Shore all right. And the Second-Shift Postal Workers from South Station Annex They’d be getting on too.  And I came to befriend Fred - Mail Sorter 1st class. He carried the Boston Herald American going south to Nantasket. It was midnight run, mind you, and his Herald was becoming Yesterday’s news. I knew no one. And found a friend in Fred.  Tired. We would speak. In short sighs. As workers do. Devoted as much attention to the streaming landscape. Eyeballing it in stupor. World where halogen lights were passing car lots.  As much our minds were on Watergate, a confused situation simmering like oatmeal in America's kitchen then, we thought about war, and watched the side of the tracks. ~~~~~~~...

Charisma and authority

Image
Recently took in a podcast on Max Weber. Like a lot of famous European intellectuals, he is someone I only know as a name on the spine of books I retrieved for BU students when I worked in Mugar library. Weber (1864-1920) was one of the folks that invented Sociology, which it seemed like everyone at BU needed to take.  But let’s get to the story. The discussion in this episode of BBC’s In Our Times centered on Weber’s writings on Charisma – more specifically Charismatic Authority.  The question asked is ‘what makes people obey?’ Well, this a question that just came up at lunch yesterday. Each of us at lunch had former friends, seemingly intelligent, who have seen their way to disenfranchise their political opponents (us) by insisting Donald Trump is president of the United States. How does something like this happen? Hasn’t happened before in my life. Some people obey a hypnotic watch swung by Trump who I now have to admit is charismatic at the same time he is an Insane Conniv...

Advice for an Existential Dilemma

Image
Over recent years and particularly during the COVID-19 Pandemic, high school mates have created a semi-regular email chain – I call it The Stumps Line.  [“Bold Stumps” being the group members’ nickname.] Dave asked the group one day to share their thoughts about health, life and existence -- which we did. Then, he folded highlights together into a bloody good poem, presented by his courtesy, here.  Advice for an Existential Dilemma ---------------------------------------------  Get up off the crapper, old boy Lay down your fork and spoon Gaze past your self-horizons Take a good look around   Walk briskly the streets of Bologna Carmel Valley, Houston and Racine See what’s happening with your neighbors Reach out and help someone   Eat Life for Breakfast It’s better than the alternative brand Remember Cyndi Lauper Keep your blender always on   Learn to pray in ways that suit you Honor and cherish everyone you’ve loved Build a wheelchair ramp to heaven Make you...

Miss Vaughan's Dress Shop

Image
My aunt Gert (Birdie) had Miss Vaughan's dress shop in Milton on Central Ave by the Mattapan border. We would visit from Wisconsin and I'd be consigned to the dress shop and general area for the afternoon while my folks went around. The ladies of Milton would come there for dresses. One repeatedly, who would try things on, look in the mirror and then exult: "I love it, Miss Vaughan!" which was a catch phrase always got a laugh at home. Often sent to the dress shop dark back room to make boxes. which I was terrible at even tho my cousin Mimi might try to teach me (everyone in my Boston family had easy to pronounce alternative names). Behind the store was a brook and cascade. George Bush the Older was born not far from here. Across the street was Hendrie's Ice Cream where we would always end up. It was an emporium of the the stuff. Visiting Christmas always meant vanilla ice cream santas (why's it got to be vanilla?!) covered with a thin outer santa clause icing...

Hydroplaning Country Cow Surfer

Bessie after the war By the green sea Ruminating. Lee’s been through here. Hannibal too. Playing whisk and canasta On the fold up map table Trading armies like baseball cards On a rainy summer day. Thinks to make a surf board And drift out like a ship. - Jack V.

European Supply Chain War Blues Prose . . . Or, resounding thud of nada..

At night I read hear or see the dispatches. An old man./Ham radio people are intercepting the missives. | They tell a story of a 'conventional war'. Its brutal. Shells flying. Blood spilling. | In the West, People pop off, safe on their twitter account. | News  Talk is chatter. Theres been too much of it by media filling up space. Its a job. | Talk is chatter. "The Russians are going to plan b." | Of course. The first thing that goes in war (well after truth) is plan a | then b c d and so on. | The pentagon expected a russian roll over and was preparing guerilla war armaments with pamphlets etc. it's said | |What this is is conventional war tho asymmetrical which means confusing - they dont line up for the hike. yet they go out everyday.||things will go wrong with ukranian supply lines and how we adapt how they adapt will be crucial||if you are following along in your hymnal||How well we adapt has a lot to do with supply chains.||The constant drumbeat of the las...
