Moon Traveller Herald this year took on a new tenor, while upholding our dependable topical strategy as known for many past moons. Some space science, some essays, some reporting, some poems. A mudslinging world intruded only a bit..we even took some time to think about Man's Fate and AI. But that came up short. The world in a tumble, as the cookie crumbled. Let’s review some of the best stuff! - J.V.
A few pages into The Philosophy of Modern Song you realize it doesn’t neatly attach to an expectation you might venture when hearing Dylan was publishing such a selection of essays. I understand that even some of his most dedicated fans wrestle with Dylan’s writings in The Philosophy of Modern Song. Dylan can surreally obscure, conceal and cloak at the same time he unmasks bits of reality. I tried to share what I got out of the book in this write-up. With foot still in era of the Put-on, Dylan can be Off-putting. But I say ‘Dig it!”

Didnt write so many essays, myself, but there were a few. Thoughts as I tossed an old book came to focus on John Berryman, and my days in Madison...
Berryman, Corso, and Tuschen - John Berryman today is probably in the category called cancelled, where he hangs out with Hemingway, the king of cancelled, and others. Like Hemingway his father shot himself, and like Hemingway he would commit suicide, in this case jumping off a bridge in Minneapolis. Sadness and drink in common cause.

In that same vein was a little riff on organist and producer Ron Levy and my design for his Cocoanut Milk record in the Boston Blues days ...
Levytron Days - We were celebrating Mardi Gras a few weeks ago, listening to New Orleans and New Orleans-style music. Pulled out an old EP 45 by Boston's Ron Levy Bluesman Band. Coconaut Milk. Then, found that Ron had posted it to his YouTube page. I'd done the art for that. There was a story to it.

Exciting Sunday when Monday might have been doom for Wall St. The Government found a buyer, and for most people, this turned out to be less than a blip. There's a feel about it. Like when the news truck is arriving. Like when the paper hits the sidewalk with a slap. I dont recall writing a bigger story on deadline. Shared the byline with two other writers ...

Funny but a podcast can coincide with a shock to the system but it can. Silent vampire films can get under the modern man’s skin, and awaken old wounds, I guess. I was listening to a BBC panel discussion when I learned about Carl Theodor Dreyer’s influence on Ingmar Berman. Just a few slides from his Vampr showed me the roots of symbolism, and haunting motifs from mankind’s silent black & white days. The vampire is an agent with a suitcase of fear that's travelled to our own times on celluloid. So, a poem arose. It was also inflenced by Pat Metheny's discussion of Wes Montgomery's ability to find logical means of rhytmic presentation. So, a jazz blues poem...
Nosferatu was the man who vamped.
Who was like
a hard hissing burden.
cast as he was
part man, part mythos
ranging from rake to maiden
with the shadowy purpose
to cloud-up the minds of man and time >>>

.... Also, I penned a brief behind-the-scenes piece based on another VentureBeat piece. Ahead of an embargo, one of the reporters asked if anyone had the bandwidth to take an interview with a winner of an IEEE Lifetime Award. It was Bob Metcalfe [shown above] and I said yes. On this blog, I shared some of the Ethernet co-inventor’s thinking on the evolution of humankind in the face of technology advances.
