Al compas del mundo – programa Number 53 - I Love Albanian Music

We’re heading east this week. Not to the Far East, not the Middle East, but the Near East (no, not Boston). Plenty to dance about with accordions, balalaikas, flutes and drums. Also a lovely polyphony of voices, particularly notable the unique Georgian choruses. Islamic Sufi music is provided by the Aznash Ensemble of Chechnya, with the goal of mystic trance through the repetition of God’s name and attributes – ever faster, ever more intense. Similar to the Gnaoua music of Morocco, the Whirling Dervishes of Turkey, and the voudoun chants of Dahomey (inherited by Cuba and Haiti). God is great, or so they tell me. Oh, and Ukraine and Russia can coexist, separate but equal, as long as it’s on my program. My rules. -J.H.
