If you want to check out the strength and spectacle of Ethiopian saxophonists, look no further than the sounds of Mulatu Astatke represented here – at home in Addis Ababa or the Southside of Chicago. Wilder still is another great, Getachew Mekuria (or Mekurya), pictured here, playing gigs with the Dutch proto-punk band The Ex, as can be seen in many YouTube videos. A “tezeta” is the Ethiopian equivalent of the blues, a bar song, slow, sorrowful and amped up by tej, a potent honey wine…which in neighboring Sudan isn’t likely to be found, at least publicly. In the Islamic North religious doctrine frowns on such pleasures but the people revel in the joy of music. Al-Bilabil (“The Nightingales”) were three sisters who broke the sex barrier by recording and performing in concerts, starting in 1971. They were dubbed the “Sudanese Supremes” and gained fame throughout East Africa. I find a serene sweetness in their music and that of the big bands that typically accompanied the most famous Khartoum singers. Is there another music in this world that sounds anything like this?
